Hi there

If I were you I'd pick The Old Man and The sea, and here are the reasons why.

1. Its an awesome book
2. The essays should be very easy to write as the book is very straightforward
3. It has a little country stuff (fishes), but whatever essay you write on this, everyone will get impressed because its supposed to be a "COOL" book of the literary world
4. Therefore easy marks and credits.
5. last but not the least, THE BOOK IS AMAZINGLY SHORT AND SHOULD TAKE YOU LIKE ONE NIGHT TO READ IT.

Hmmmm...You may have a hard time with this list then. I love The Good Earth by Pearl S Buck but you may not - it's about the life of a chinese peasant in the 1800's (so quite a bit of country stuff as he starts out a a farmer but becomes a rich lord as he goes on). It's easy to read & interesting though. The author was from a missionary family living in China in the late 1800's - early 1900's. The book was published in 1921 & a movie of it came out in the 40's.

O.K. - the stuff they give you in high school is not crap - they are trying to teach you something while you read - it's the reason a book becomes a classic. Of these on the list, I'd read The Once and Future King.

I've read Anne Rice books - they are not in the same league as the books on this list.

You need to change your attitude about books - there's seldom any genre' of writing that does not produce a few first rate books. I'm a SciFi reader - not horror - and even I succumb to a Jane Austen book now and then. (In case you didn't know, SciFi readers - like me - consider the Romance genre' brain candy.)

The shocking thing you are going to find out is that the people of prior generations were just as insightful and intelligent as we are. They still have something to teach us and we certainly have a lot to learn.

Good reading.

a million. Virginia [i'm a July infant] 2. Anna[No lipstick, hi some thing cool, for the girl I have been given #7 then #13, it relatively is my birthday, 13 July :)] 3. Frank [different - I wanna pass to Sweden] 4. Harold [Multi animals-In my new abode we've a cat, a canines, and 2 birds] Virginia and Anna i'm no longer keen on, however the nickname Ginny is lovable. Frank is oddly good-looking so i like it, and Harold isn't some thing i might use, even if it has a nerdy, previous college allure i won't be able to describe.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and The Good Earth are really the most intersting on that list. But the Pearl and the Old Man and the Sea the shortest ones, but they are the most boring.

out of that list i would pick A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or The Pearl. Steinbeck's books are really good and generally straightforward. Old Man and the Sea is terrible and will bore you to death, but it''s probably the easiest to write an essay on. But it's not like you have to read just one. Read b/c you want to, not b/c you have to.

I liked The Call of the Wild but I like dogs. The Pearl is painful but relatively short. If you like the city why don't you try A Tree Grows in Brooklyn?

As I recall, A tree Grows in Brooklyn was an easy read. I also like Steinbeck, but have admittedly not read The Pearl. (9th grade, whew it's been 15 years.)

The old man and the sea is my favorite and my 11 year old LOVES The call of the wild. Actually She loves anything by Jack London. Both of these are amazing books.

I personally liked The Once and Future King.
I hated Old Man and the Sea--boring!
I tolerated The Pearl--boring
I tolerated The Good Earth--boring.
I did not read Troy.
I did not read A tree grows...but they had several references to that in Bugs Bunny cartoons.
Call of the Wild was pretty good.
If you like true war stories, then Hiroshima is good.
