The problem with questions like this is the most people have conservative views about some issues and liberal views about others. For example, I think we need to get rid of the IRS and go to a flat tax, I think we should close the border, and I think people should take more responsiblity for their lives and the federal government is way too large.
On the other hand, I am pro-choice, I think flag burning is wrong but is covered by freedom of speech, and I think we should begin withdrawing from Iraq now.
If I were to try to identify the one single issue that typically is a difference is the stand on abortion.

Republicans have a clear vision of the future. Democrats can't even make sense of what's happening today. Republicans make history. Democrats never even learn from history. Let me cite some examples.
Nixon was the first President who could imagine dealing with China. It was his hope that opening up China to the West would be his legacy. Well, China has turned quite capitalist since then, hasn't it?
Reagan saw the USSR not as some invincible Goliath, but as a crumbling old building ready to collapse under the weight of its own inefficiencies. All the economists of the day, Galbraith, Samuelson told Reagan he was crazy. In their "expert" opinion, Russia was in great economic health. Reagan only had to see the pitiful array of goods in a Moscow store to immediately deduce that was not a sign of a healthy economy. While no Liberal could ever conceive of defeating the USSR, Reagan, in the words of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thather "won the Cold War without firing a shot".
Just as Liberals could never conceive of the Berlin wall coming down, they cannot see how planting the seeds of democracy in the Middle East will eventually transform the entire region to be more stable, democratic, and tolerant.
Democrats think every problem can be solved by bigger government. Republicans realize that anything run by the government will cost far more than something done privately (e.g. education), and be far less efficient. I now live in a country with Socialized medicine. If I need an operation, I am getting it done elsewhere! Socialized anything means substandard and third rate. It reminds me of a quote by an ancient Greek philospher (Plato, I think): "That which belongs to everyone is of use to no one".
Republicans support laws which treat everyone fairly and equally. Democrats take a paternalistic attitude that certain groups or minorities are incapable of keeping pace with the rest of society, and therefore need special help. However, this "help" simply keeps them beholden to the government. It is like giving an addict a syringe of cocaine every day; he'll never kick the habit.

The difference is 'supposed' to be that Conservatives favor small government, and Liberals favor big government...I don't understand what happened to that along the way.

Liberals look at this country and see what's bad and say its all due to the disparity between the rich and the poor. We must punish the rich and reward the poor and everything will be better.
Conservative look at this country and see what's good and say our society has benefitted from the growth of free enterprise and business competition. We must reward the elements of our society that encourage capitalism and business growth.

Less government involvement (concervative) vs. More government involvement (liberal).
It's all crap... We need to remove the label barrier and just look at the person who wants to sit at the "throne". Do not elect another idiot.
Wake-up people... No 2 people are the same. To give 2 distinct generalizations in todays world is to plead ignorance. We have to focus on who we're putting into power, not an ideology of government rule. Ideologies get you nowhere (just look at communism). Even the Chinese as a communist country are adapting the free market and they are able to prosper because they can bend on ideal political agendas and do what is right for the people in their country.

Look at these answers carefully... those that out and out bash members of either group are extremists, either extreme left or extreme right and it is their brand of thinking ("my way or the highway") that continues to divide this country... for 200 years this country has thrived with those on either side finding a way to compromise and do what is best for the country... look at the Middle East, look at France, look at any place in this world with continuous or periodic upheavals and outbursts of violence and you will find that they have one thing in common - they are controlled by extremists; whether extreme left or extreme right, they are blinded by their passions and hatred of anyone who is different... moderacy is the only ticket to peace...

Conservatives hold to code of moral conduct and basic the constitution and what it says. Liberals are pro abortion pro gay pro big tax increases but they don't stand against anything. I know a lot of them don't believe what they say they just think it's what the people want to hear. And truth doesn't get you elected votes do.

One works for their money and the other has is a liberal.
One is for freedom, and protecting our country, and the other is a liberal.
One uses propaganda and insults and the other is a conservative.
I'm a middle of the road person and vote for both parties in case you were wondering, but I lean toward the Republicans as you can tell. I'm leaning further to the right, as the Democrats keep going further and further left.

Conservatives are fact based thinkers that don't mind taking care of themselves and acting morally and responsibly. Liberals are "tree-hugging hippies", that have no moral back-bone and "think" (I use the term very loosely) that it is the government's responsibility to take care of them.
