synchronicity ... strange that you should ask, as it's been a recent struggle
mentally draw back and meditate in as calm and detached manner as you can (briefly, with each inward breath)
what are *my* motivations?
how really necessary are they?
(as someone else said)
in ten years, what will I want?
ask yourself, "what would _______ do?"
If you peel deeply into the onion, and find a new, deeper, consideration at each level, at some point you must stop and accept the reality you have found.
to deal with this, find stilness within.
and there is always that semi-cliche :
"to thine own self be true"
- - -
"learn?"
I don't really know how ... maybe simply accept that you can do no more than your best.
be good to yourself, people care

Actually, you will never be able to let go of it entirely. You have to learn from the pain and grow as a person. You only have this one life to live and you have to make the best of whatever you have and what you are. You can't allow something to make you a victim. You are the master of your fate. Will you allow the rock in the road to be a stumbling block or a stepping stone? You make choices in life...and how you will heal from what has happened is a choice that you must make. Learn the lesson that it offers and then don't make the same mistake the next time.

Ask yourself these things:
Will it matter to me in 5 days? 5 weeks? 5 months? 5 years?
Whatever the answer there, gives you a good idea of how long it will take you to get over something.
Those few questions can help us all get through life by prioritizing things as they matter to us. The amount of interest we have for every item in question for us as we go through our daily lives dictate the anount of time and energy we devote to things.
Really, though, when it comes right down to it, there shouldn't be too many things that we hold onto for the rest of our lives, except the really important stuff. Family, good friends, being true to yourself, and respect for others.
Good luck letting go of the things that bother you. Life is too short to hold onto things that won't matter if a few years anyways....

Proverbs 4:23 (King James Version)
23Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
In plain English, guard your heart, for it is a fragile thing. It holds our emotions and feelings.

I think you have to hit rock bottom with that person - however they affect you in your life.
Once that situation happens - and sometimes ONLY if it happens - can you realize what kind of person they are & how much better off you can & will be without them in your life.
