I like to just keep it in drive. That way I don't have to worry about putting it in gear when I'm ready to take off. Don't want to look silly by revving the engine by forgetting to put it in drive.

I assume you mean an automatic transmission in your car? There is no harm in staying in drive, nor any benefit to shifting to park/neutral. They were designed to do stay in drive when you are at a stop, the transmission is not under strain or anything. In fact, you could be putting extra wear on your transmission from the extra shifting, not to mention damage if you forget to shift back after the light changes, and slam it into D at high engine rpm at the last second to take off.

If you shift to park then you can let off of the brake pedal and rest your foot.

no it doesn't hurt it at all to set in idle for a while it was designed to take it,putting it in neutral will serve no purpose at all,and wont help nothing, just leave it in gear when at a light or anything,as long as your in it it wont hurt it,good luck hope this helps.
