Proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, Decoration Day was to be observed on May 30, 1858 nationwide.
1882 saw the first use of the alternative name, Memorial Day becoming common after World War II and made official in 1967. In 1971, Memorial Day was move to the last Monday in May.
