The children are a gift from God and if you believe in God you know that as a parent your most important job is to raise those children to know God's way. God always, always comes first, and He would never steer you wrong.

Let us consider both extremes and see which we find to be worse, shall we?
Suppose that you gave God your highest priority and your children your lowest. Because every second of life has a potentially infinite reward in the afterlife, you do not spend even one second apart from effort to DIRECTLY worship and praise your God if you can possibly help it. Your children will quickly learn that they are of no importance, may be taken away by the state for your neglect, and will come to be either just as fanatic as you (it's the only way they can spend time with you) or will come to hate you AND your God.
On the other hand, if you prioritized your children first and foremost and your God last, then you would spend as much time as humanly possible with them and bettering them. They would know directly that there was at least one person who loved and cared for them and was always on their side. And they would probably (except when they're teenagers) respect your opinions and adopt many of them for their own. You would be their hero and friend, and they would probably want to be like you... who could blame them?
Even if you don't already find the first situation monstrous and the second sweet, consider this - when you put your children first, they are much more likely to be attracted to your religion rather than repulsed by it. Even if you make it in no way the focus of your life.
If there are gods who designed humans, we must have an instinct to nurture and care for our children for a REASON, neh?

I don't quite believe in the whole aspect of God but I do believe that in every parent there is a part of God if they fulfill their duty as parents with dignity and love! So I'll say you've got to choose: God is an abstract energy while your children are from your womb, crawl at your feet and if you fulfill your parental duty then they shall walk by your side forever!
They say God is everywhere and before all in our hearts by being the best we can, so you'll never have to choose between your children and God because the choice is already made in your heart! :-)
Thank you!

There is something that I can do about my children. I can help them. I can teach them even now when they are over 30. I can only do what I am able to do in this world and hope that is enough to please God. I think that it is. I don't think that you have to choose between the two. They are not either or.

It depends on the day of the week. I have been punished by both from time to time. Though I must admit that I have better luck with god than my children philosophically speaking of course.

There is no god so the question is moot.
I personally have no children, but children in general are much more fun to be around than a mythological being like the tooth fairy.
Edit: God is love? That really cracks me up:
Ex 12:29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
12:30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
How would you feel if god got angry at George Bush and killed your first child b/c of it?

The two go hand in hand...God is love, and children are just another aspect of that love that God provides each of us, whether we accept it or not...we are all his children, no matter the age we are. Each of us just one of the billions of miracles he creates for us on this earth.
The best gift you can give your children is exposing them to God's love...and I am certain one of the best gifts you can give God is the love of your children.
I think it is sad that so many have compared the amazing ways of the Lord with the tooth fairy...a ridiculous comparison...but to each their own.

My children. I believe God can take care of him/her/themselves, and don't need my feeble little "praises" or worship. I believe God, or The Gods, is/are above that sort of egotistical childishness.
As the loving parent that God(s) must be, I believe that we must follow the same example, and place our own children first.
To Mr. Grudge, above... I APOLOGIZE! I liked your answer, and meant to hit the Thumbs Up button, but hit the Thumbs Down button by mistake! So, know that I do approve of your answer, and am saying THUMBS UP to you.
