Before you can have a green, healthy lawn you must have a good foundation. Forget the brown areas, and the weeds (for now). Here's the work you need to do, preferably when the weather gets cooler. Don't bother starting this in the summer, it's too hot. 1) If the lawn is repairable, rake it clean of dead thatch, or use a power tool that does it for you. These can be rented. If the lawn is too far gone, it may have to be roto-tilled. 2) Dump about 1one inch of rich, humus-filled top soil on top of the lawn and level it. 3) add a good quality grass seed for your area of the country. This will vary depending on which state you live in. A local nursery can guide you. Get a good brand (eg. Scott's) with little or no weed seed. 4) After spreading the seed, rake it gently into the soil and add a good starter fertilizer (eg. Scott's) 5) water morning and evening for 30 minutes each time. Do this for at least 2 weeks. 6) If you still have ants, you can spread a good insect control (granules are best) to eliminate them- check with the local nursery as to which is best for your area. Lots of work ahead, but so is a beautiful lawn.

First thing you need to do is take care of that ant problem. Some people like to use "pesticide"...I use C4 charges. You only need about 2-3 lbs of C4 per ant hill. Now once you've taken care of that problem you need to move on to the thinning grass. Now what you need to do for that is add flour and egg yolk to the grass and mix it together. after that heat it to about 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Use caution. Sometimes the ants try to fight back.

Lawn needs to be fertilized 3 times a year--Easter, Memorial Day, and Halloween--when you fertilize in the fall the roots get thicker during the winter. Water it well when its dry, early morning is the best time. During the hottest time of the summer I water at night-it stays wetter longer this way.Spray your weeds with Weed-B-Gone it kills the weeds but not the grass. If you mow it too short it will yellow the lawn.

Water more, fertilize, get ant killer, then starting early next spring, put down a pre-emergent as the weather begins to warm but before anything starts to grow. Then mid spring fertilize, late spring fertilize, early fall fertilize with winter prep fertilizer. Apply week killer with the fertilizer or at the same time anyhow. Water about 2 inches per week in the summer if you don't get that much rain. You get little cups at home centers to measure watering amounts.
