Having travelled and lived abroad most of my life the only 'broadening' I am aware of is that I now see that the world is in a mess and my own country is as bad as everywhere else.

I think travel does broaden the mind. There is no better way to understand how different people live and their culture than to travel. You will see most of the time the stuff you see on tv is false or is only based on the actions of a few. Also travelling helps you appreciate what you have in your own country that you take for granted. For example, some countries do not have freedom of speech and will punish people for talking bad about the government. Also, you can really understand why people are different if you get to see and stay in their environment.

It does give you more of a world view, even if it's that you think the world is a mess. I've lived in other countries and think that it's a good experience. Many people spend most of their lives in the same state or small region and don't experience the differences in culture, even in their own country.
