The more masculine of the two keeps the name. The more feminine of the two changes theirs.

There are no rules. Just keep that sentence in mind when anything gay and lesbian comes across. Gays and lesbians can decide what they are going to do without the pressure that the rules of society places on the couple.

For instance, my partner and I didn't use the last name rule at all. We made a new last name by making it a combination of both of our old last names.

That is up to the individuals involved, just like with any other couple. My own daughter and her husband chose to both take a hyphenated name, I've also known couples where neither did. In one heterosexual BDSM couple of my acquaintance the submissive male changed his, and there was nothing masculine about her or feminine about him, they simply regarded a wedding ring as a slave collar he could wear to work. Changing the woman's name is a holdover from the days when marriage was nothing more than a transfer of property (the woman) from one owner (the father) to a new owner (the husband). Ruth Gader Ginsberg, of the U.S. Supreme Court, has recalled textbooks when she was in law school stating that "Land, like women, should be owned." From an moral point of view, why should either person have give up their identity, unless that is what works for them as individuals?

It is the same as straight relationships. The woman doesn't have to change her last name if she doesn't want to. It is the person who feels more comfortable changing theirs. In some relationships, neither of the two changes their last name.

Why would I have to take a new name? The one on my birth certificate is fine with me.
I don't need to change my name to show that I'm someone's property. Even most of my str8 friends have moved past that evil, antiquated custom.

They don't have to change their names. If they did want to, they would just file a name change with the court.
