1.

Firstly, work out the time spent travelling all together, which is 7 am - 2.30pm minus the one hour. The travelling time is 6 and a half hours. If you go to the destination from home, and then return home later the distance must be the same. Overall the travelling speed is 65mph (40 there and 25 back). If you travel 65mph for 6.5 hours you will have travelled 422.5 miles. Divide that by two to get the distance one way (211.25miles)

2. my head is too mashed to think about this one - sorry!

I think this is correct - I'm usually very good at maths and problem solving but I'm ill and on mega-strength "mess with your mind" type painkillers so sorry if I'm wrong!

rate X time =distance (rt=d)
t= d/r
t driving to destination = d/49 hours
time at destination = 1 hour
time returning = d/25
total time = d/49 +1 + d/25 = 2:30PM -7:00AM = 7.5 hours
25d/(25*49) +25*49/(25*49) +49d/(25*49)= 25*49*7.5/(25*49).
74d+1225 =9187.5
74d = 7962.5
d = 107.6 miles

x= 1st number
91-x = 2nd number
x/(91-x) = 14 +1/(91-x)
x(91-x) -1(91-x) = 14
(x-1)/(91-x) = 14
x-1 = 1274 -14x
15x = 1275
x = 85 = first number
91-x = 6 = 2nd number

1. Total time span = 7.5 hours
Time in library = 1.0 hours
Time in transit = 6.5 hours

To library (x) + to home (y) = 6.5 hours
Distance each way is the same.
40mi/hr* x hours = 25mi/hr* y hours
x = 25/40y
Substitute
25/40y +y =6.5
y= 4.0 hours
x = 2.5 hours
Distance = 40 mi/hr * 2.5 hours = 100 miles
or
Distance = 25mi/hr*4.0 hours = 100 miles
