I have recently got an obsession for sci-fi. I really want to read something along the lines of an X Men/Fantastic 4 style book.

Any recommendations pls, with a tiny synopsis.

The Old kingdom series.
Sabriel, Lireal then Abhorsen, a trilogy by Garth Nix.
It is set in two lands, one with "charter" magic, and one very similar to our own. They are all about dark magic, and destiny, with a subtle humour to keep you interested.

And if you enjoyed those, read The keys to the kingdom by the same author. It's about a normal boy, who is mistakenly given powers over everything in the universe, but at the same time, he tries to keep his family safe.

try the old kingdom series by garth nix! it is a trilogy. the first book (Sabriel) is about sabriel, the abhorsen's daughter nad how she has to keep the dead dead and defeat kerrigor, the kind of brother of the thought dead prince who now wants to control the dead to his powerful advatntage. book two (Lirael) is about lirael a half sister of sabriel's that does not know of the kinship. she lives with the clayr but does not have the sight which is what the clayr do. they predict the future. she also looks different from the other clayr girls (clayr are almost always girls) since she has black hair like sabriel's and pale skin, the opposite of the others with thier blonde hair and dark skin. it is not that the other clayr are racist that she has no friends but lirael is in her teen years nad should have gotten the power of eight several years ago. she also does not have a mother but does have an aunt. when caught spying she is given a job in the clayr library to keep her busy. she learns as much as possible in the library and creates a friend, the dod- disresputable dog. she fights creatures and has to leave the clayr glacier due to a vision the others had about her and the evil forces at work outside the glacier. she meets sabriel's (sabriel is now queen) son sameth and they journey together. in the last book (abhorsen) they fight against kerrigor and the dead in a terrible battle in which lirael is injured.but she does live. i will not tell you the end but that i really like it!

Try the Nightside series by Simon R. Green - also The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Nightside is set in the nightside of "London", some folk can get back & forth between these 2 parallels and some choose to stay where magic and weirdness (aliens, Merlin, old gods turned bouncer in clubs) the "hero" is really an anti-hero IN the Nightside - but you have to love him!

The Dresden Files is all about Harry Dresden, he's a private detective who happens to be a magician in a world where magic & science sort of co-exist.

Try Orson Scott Card. Start with Ender's Game, a great story about a young man who is selected to train to save his world. He's very young, but those who chose him knew what they were doing. The story recounts his training adventures and a great intergalactic battle at the end. If you like the book, there is a series that follows his adventures. It is well written, one of the 100 top books of the 20th century, tells a great story, and has a powerful underlying meaning if you like to look for such things. Great book!! Marion Zimmer Bradley also writes some good science fiction that will glue you to your seat. Have a great read!

Chanur Series - CJ Cherryh

First contact series between humans and a trading compact of about 10 alien species. Hard science, politics lots of action and tension. One of my favorite series. She also has a series that starts with Foreigner, 3 trilogies so far. THey tend towards the culture and politics but have a ton of action as well, also a first contact series also hard science.

Anything by Elizabeth Moon, her fantasy is as good as her scifi and that's hard to find. Start with Hunting Party though you can get the first 3 in one now I think it's called Heris Serrano. Military Scifi, hard science. Buckets of action.
