i'm going to start taking zinc but i'm a bit confused, it states that i should take it as a food supplement. Does this mean i only need to take a zinc tablet and no food or do i take a zinc tablet as well as food

Supplements are taken in addition to food, and it's usually best to taken them with or immediately after a meal. It is safest not to take more than 25 mg of zinc a day unless prescribed by your doctor. Zinc supplements can cause upset stomach for some people, but most people can take a multi-vitamin/mineral such as Centrum without stomach problems.

Take the zinc in addition to the food - supplement means "adding to" - NOT "instead of".
