If you shoot yourself in the mouth, the bullet should pass through the back of the head severing the nerves that connect brain and body. This way death is instantaneous. If you get shot in the side of the head there is a small chance the body will still function. You may even be alive for 15-30 minutes after pulling the trigger.

I've always wondered that myself. Actually if you read up on it, if you put the gun in your mouth, you have a BETTER chance of survival than if you put it up to your temple. If you don't angle the gun just right the bullet will just go through some bone, tissue, back of your neck, etc and will just cause you more harm. If you put it to your temple, the bullet will go straight through your brain and kill you instantly.
I think a lot of the time people are afraid that the recoil from the gun or something else like shaky nerves will prevent them from getting the "job" done. I figure that they put the gun in their mouth for 1 of 2 reasons.
Either they have seen it in movies or on tv and they don't realize that it doesn't always work, OR they think that by putting the weapon in their mouth, they will "steady" their hand or the gun, and that probably just makes them feel even a little better about the situation.

The kicking of the gun can actually cause a more painful, grazing shot when fired at the temple. There is a much higher survival rate when aiming at the temple. When in the mouth, however, the gun doesn't buck nearly as far "off the mark" and also has a greater chance at hitting both the cerebrum and the cerebellum, which will in effect completely disable the individual in question.
As to how painful it is, it would really only be painful if you survived the shot. Otherwise, your life would be snuffed rather quickly.

If you shoot yourself in the temple there is a chance that you will not die. Think about it for a second, if you are at the point where you are going to commit suicide you are probably shaky and not thinking very clearly. Putting the gun in your mouth ensures the job will get done and you won't end up a vegetable.

How long do you think the person is going to be around after pulling the trigger to feel any pain? Usually a person who has got to the point where they feel they don't want to be on this earth anymore isn't thinking about the pain they might get by eating a bullet, more the relief by not being alive any more. Besides, there are people who have survived shooting themselves through the temple....

You're guarenteed "a hole in one" as we like to term that type of thing.
Against your temple ususally works but too much room for a slip or the bullet to take a route that may not kill you. Having the muzzle blast of a pistol (or shotgun) go off in one's mouth coupled with the velocity of the bullet slamming into the soft tissue of the roof of the mouth usually causes enough interior pressure to blow your brains out or enough traumatic injury that would cause death almost instantly.
If not instantly you can bet you won't be conscience to know if you died immediately or not.

its really easy to screw that up no matter how you do it. The mouth puts it at a pretty severe angle, but often people believe the bullet will hit the brain in the right spot if they get it closer. I, personally would take a shotgun to the base of the neck- the whole head is destroyed and even if there's a slip, its not gonna matter because half of your head will be gone.

Severes spinal cord and destroys part of the brain, probably resulting in instant unconciousness. A bullet fired at close range through the temple wouldn't necessarily be any more effective than that.

Through the mouth, the bullet will sever the top of the spinal cord. Through the temple, it could go straight through and out the other side.

I feel that it is a extreme gesture that they have lost confidence. I think putting it in the mouth is a way of not talking themselves out of it. Pain is not a worry cause they are planning to take their pain away they think. That is my opinion and it is a sad thing that people lose control of that.
