84 divided by 100 then multiplied by 17 and a 1/2.
Expensive for a cd player, I'm sure you could find a cheaper one than that.

84 pounds is the total amount on which u r expected to calculate 17.5% so naturally 84 pounds is 100% and the total cost including taxes is is 117.5% [84] = 117.5/100 * 84 = 98.7 pounds

or

you could look at it as 84 pounds + 17.5%[84 pounds] = 84 + 17.5/100 * 84 = 98.7 pounds

Just multiply the CD cost by 1.175 getting £98.7.
That's an expensive CD and a whopping tax!

You can do it two ways

117.5% of 84

or

84 + (17.5% of 84)

[to do percentages, take the percent, divide by 100, and multiply by the number. For example, 117.5% of 84 is (117.5/100) x 84]

u should be able to do this sort of sum without a calculator !!

First find 10% = £ 8.40 ( divide amount by 10 )

Half this to get 5% = £ 4.20

Then half this again to get 2 1/2 % = £ 2.10

Then add these three together to get 17 1/2 % ;

£8.40 + £4.20 + £2.10 = £14.70

Now add this on to the original amount to get £ £ 98.70
