I believe that it should be legalized.
Why:
* The income could be taxed.
* The workers would be able to get health benefits and insurance coverage. (And I mean both male and female workers. Women are not the only prostitutes, there are plenty of male ones as well.)
* They can have an actual WORK PLACE, not just street corners and/or cheap hotel rooms. (This is the case in Denmark. Prostitution is legal there and the women and men have a work place where they have a small room and bathroom. They conduct business there and can then go home.)
* It's a safety issue now. With prostitution legalized, the workers will be able to better maintain their OWN health, and then that will help to control STDs of all sorts in their clientèle as well.
* If it became legalized, perhaps we could work on getting rid of the stupid stigma attached to it. There is no point in having the stigma attached. These people are making a living and generally a decent living, they deserve the same protection in the workplace that people in "normal" jobs get.

Yes. I think if they legalize prositution, they can regulate it. They can eliminate "street walkers" and test them regularly for STDs. It is also safer for the prostitute to be in a safe building that the customers visit, rather than an alley. I also believe that all customers should need to confidentially register when visiting a prostitute (swipe driver's license), so if a disease breaks out, they can be informed right away. I don't have any proof of this, but I also feel it may cut down on rape. A lot of rape is more about power than sex, but I still think it can cut down. I think if a sex offender has urges, it will be safer and easier if they visit a prostitute. The government can also collect tax on the services, and even extra with a "sin tax". I don't think its morally right, but I believe this can cut down on a lot of crime and also generate a lot of uncollected tax revenue. I think it is safer for for everyone, not just prostitutes and johns. Also, I don't think it is any more wrong morally than going to a bar and using somebody for sex, and nobody's feelings get hurt. Just my opinion.
p.s. if it is legalized, there won't be anymore street hookers, to the those who commented on it. They will be in buildings with several bedrooms set up, I assume. And I'm sure steps would be made so they receive good health care benefits.

Yes it should be. This was asked earlier today, but to recap:
1. The only reason for it to be illegal is religious enforced morality.
2. It would allow safer working conditions for the workers
3. It would reduce the amount of crime associated with it.
4. It would reduce the the amount of STD's transmitted by prostitution.
5. Not everyone believes that it makes the worker (male or female) a sex object or that it lessens the value of love of family; this should not be enforced by law on everyone but should be an individual choice.
6. Increased tax revenue.
I've spoken with sex workers in other countries and they feel neither abused or debased. Overall I'd say they're quite happy with their chosen profession.

If your a libertarian, you would probably say " Yes the government should stay out of personal behaviors."
I believe it should be illegal because it's in the best interest of the country. Prostitution causes many social problems, which the government and society end up dealing with. ( drug use, violence against women, etc, etc)
With the current climate in America, I do believe someday it will become legal, hopefully not soon.
For those contending legalizing it would remove streetwalkers, go to Nevada. Prostitution is legal in many counties, but the streetwalking still goes on.

My answer would be no. Prostitution is simply the word for describing that a woman is degraded for profit. And even then, the profit isn't enough. Even if it were legal, prostitutes would not get the proper health care. The lifestyle itself is detrimental to their health. Ask any prostitute if she's happy with herself and her lifestyle. If she's honest, I bet her answer is no. I can pretty much guarantee, if she could make the same amount of money in a 'legal' job, she would choose the 'legal' job.

Illegal prostitution is a health risk. In Vegas, the prostitute has to have tests for stds on a weekly basis. This is better than the alternative.
We could also tax the income.
As for morality, it is not the government's place to help people to lead moral lives.

Prostitution should not be legal. It is the part of adultery and fornication. According to religious scriptures it is completely prohibhited. It can spread AIDS, can make a woman sufferer from complex in aspect of social status. Sex is for husband and wife and bring new babies on the Earth. It should not be used for money earning. It is not a work of humanity.

Prostitution is a lot like abortion, legal or not, no one's ever going to stop it.

No.
I don't know how much of a difference it makes. It happens weather it is legal or not. But if it were legal it would probably be forced more often. In any case. It shouldn't happen at all.

I don't think so. God created sex for love making not for a sport whether it's for porno or prostitution. It should be something sacred and special.
