No. Your cousins are pulling your leg. Whether or not a pig will have tusks is going to depend on heredity, not environment.

Your cousins are wrong. All pigs have tusks, so to say. All a tusk is, is an extended canine tooth. Wild hogs which roam all over this country have them, they just dont grow as long as the ones on a worthog because they dont have the preditors here to deal with, and I even owned a domestic (farm) pig that grew them. They use them for defense and rutting in the ground while foraging for food. The taste of blood has nothing to do with the growing of tusks, that is in the dna of the pig. however it has been rumored that pigs that get the taste of blood will become mean.

It has nothing to do with "tasting blood". All pigs have tusks. If a pig gets loose, they will continue to grow (they are trimmed when domesticated) and will eventually protrude outside the mouth as they get older, if they are not trimmed. They may not be as large as the warthog ones, but they are still nasty. Just check out "feral pigs" on any search engine.
From a HOG site: Maintenance - Every five to six weeks, pigs should get a routine, individual health check and have some basic health care procedures done. These include: **Tusk trimming**; ear cleaning; hoof trimming; whole body checks for abrasions, abscesses or warty growths; and eye checks for ulcers or discharge.

All pigs have tusks. Our baby farm pigs always had the tusks trimmed down to prevent growth. Domesticated pigs will have to have theirs trimmed, too. No one is trimming/cutting the tusks on the wild ones, so of course, those will grow. Male & female pigs have tusks for fighting & protecting themselves & their babies.
Blood. If they taste blood, pigs may start nipping (biting) off tail or part of an ear of their neighbor pigs. Dad's never was that confined where they had room to run & not find nasty habits out of boredom. Some farmers clip off tails & trim back ears as a prevention if the hogs are in a confinement building.
Pigs will eat meat (blood) if they catch a mouse, etc.. but this will NOT make them mean. Chickens will work on a mouse too if they catch it & kill it; it don't make chickens or people mean because they eat meat.
Get some reading up on it; your couisins are thoroughly enjoying themselves with their new 'story'; watch out for new stories. Contact us farm people when (not if) they come up with new 'stories' to feed you.

Tusks strart to develop as the hog gets older. You don't usually notice them because most farm hogs are slaughtered before the tusks have an opportunity to grow. Why don't you play your own joke on your cousins. Tell them that when they are sleeping ants will crawl in to their ears.

It has nothing to do with the taste of blood. Most adult male pigs will grow tusks (depending on the breed), though it takes years for them to develop.

actually I think it's neither pig's blood nor any blood. it's rat feces. it occurs sometimes when you eat something made of some sort of powder, sugar, or any other powdery substance that was stored in a cupport or closet. when rats eat the left-overs in the trash at night their feces tend to taste like chocolate. hope that helped!!
