I read A LOT, and I'm looking for another good book. Preferably in the Middle Ages, with a female heroine. If possible, no magic. Historical disasters aren't bad either, like the Alamo or the Titanic. PLEASE don't recommend anything about the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, I've read pretty much everything about it and I'm sick of it.
I am in the 10th grade, going into the 11th, just so you know.

You might take a look at Spider's Voice by Gloria Skuyzyn which is a nice little retelling of the Eloise and Abelard story from the Middle Ages from a very unique view point.
Timeline by Michael Crichton was a great time travel book back to the Middle Ages, and Connie Willis kept my attention in her book titled Doomsday about the plague epidemic.
I am not certain where she fits historically, maybe in several places but Gillian Bradshaw writes GREAT historical fiction. I rarely put her books down when I am reading them. I just read straight through.
I feel the same way about Anne Rinaldi who has a number of historical fiction books that cross several centuries and continents.
Isabelle Allende has some nice historical fiction that usually deals with Latino themes. Julia Alvarez's Time of the Butterflies is really nice, but it deals with a time not so far into our past.
If you want to try some Native American historical fiction, you might read Mean Spirit by Linda Hogan or House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday. House is a bit difficult, but very good. I believe it is on my high school reading lists.
Cold Mountain is great Civil War historical fiction. Better than the movie!
Last Child by Michael Spooner was an interesting story of a young Mandan mixed race girl who survived the smallpox epidemic.
Jerry Spinelli's Milkweed is a great WWII Warsaw Ghetto tale.
You won't go wrong with Bradshaw or Rindaldi. The others are good reads also.
I hope you find something you enjoy--happy reading.

I'd like to recommend Anchee Min's "Empress Orchid"and its sequel, "The Last Empress". Ms Min wrote these two historical novels based on her meticulous research in the Museum of Chinese History, The Chinese National Library, the Shanghai Museum and the Forbidden City Museum in Peking, China since the heroine was Tzu Hsi whose ambition, grace and wisdom emboldened her to achieve more and more power and, consequently, had a son with the Emperor. Her son became an emperor under her advice that led to the unimaginable downfall of the last dynasty in China some 100 years ago.

Tamora Pierce
Song of the Lioness Quartet
This is a really good series that has a female heroine that kicks some major butt back in the middle ages!
1. Alanna: the first Adventure
2. In the hand of the Goddess
3. The woman who rides like a man
4. Lioness Rampant
If you like this series, Tamora Pierce has other stories that surround Allanna's life.
Hope you enjoy reading about Alanna

Right now I'm reading Sovay by Celia Rees. Haven't finished it yet, but it's set in England after the American Revolution. Pretty good so far. Also by the same author is Pirates! That was good too. Chains by Laurie Anderson was amazing! It's about a slave in the United States during the revolution. The sequel is coming out next year.

A good author is G.A. Henty. He has a whole host of historical books written between 1830-1900.
I would recommend "Knight of the White Cross" first. This is set during the Siege of Rhodes in 1410 A.D. The story follows a disenfranchised son of a knight who travels to Rhodes to fight the 'infidel'.
It does not feature a heroine, but a hero. Excellent read!

Closing: He covers some fascinating parts of history that I loved to read for the longest time. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

I can not recall the name of the author for the life of me, but the book is called "A Break with Charity". It is a pretty decent book about the Salem Witch Trials.
Also recommended is Jane Yolen's "Briar Rose", a wonderful mix of fairy tale, modern day and WW2.
