I live in the country so DSL or cable is not an option for us. Our provider and equipment are Hughes.Net. My laptop is wireless ready. Can I buy a wireless router to hook into my system that would work? If yes, what would you recommend?

You connected to someone else's wireless signal. Aside from being illegal (Homeland Security, Patriot Act, etc.) the router sounds secured, so you'd have to get the pass code or passphrase (and encryption method) from the owner - which he's not likely to do since the reason it's secured is to keep people out of it. You can get a satellite internet connection, but you have to pay the satellite provider for it - it's secured. The only places you can legally get a free internet connection are public hotspots (like Starbucks or a hotel) and cities or towns that provide free wireless signals. Anything else is either technically impossible or illegal.

Yes, it will work with no problem. Any Linsys, D-link or Buffalo Wireless Router will work. I presume you will have a modem of some kind from Hughes and that's where your wireless router will be hooked onto. So, yes it will work just fine.

Good luck,

Yes it will, providing the connection coming out of the Hughes.net box is Ethernet. You plug the wireless router WAN connection into that.

Either a linksys or netgear wireless router is fine. I'd suggest getting one that supports 802.11G (most common) or 802.11N MIMO (latest wireless standard).

Lynksys wireless routers will work with any type of satellite, cable, DSL or dial-up modem. They can be purchased just about anywhere that sells computer hardware. CompUSA, Office Depot, even Walmart carries them.

You could always "borrow" your neighbors connection. As for what you asked about, doubt it.
