If you have Windows XP pre service pack 1, you might run into some problems getting windows xp to recognize the whole 300 gigabyte disk, the best solution to that is to create a smaller partition on the disk for the os, which you should do anyway, say 10 or 15 gigabytes, then once you successfully install xp, and upgrade it to service pack 2, you should get access to the rest of the disk, if all goes well.
Also make sure that the sata 300 gigabyte drive is correctly set in th bios, and that the bios is correctly identifying the 300 gig sata drive, and that you have it correctly configured, not raid, but standard. Sometimes you have to go into the actual sata bios, which is sometimes separate from the main bios, depends on the mobo, and configure it in a not very intuitive way, in with gigabyte mobos you have to first set in the main bios 'sata raid active', then in the sata bios, you have to set it to non-raid. Asus may be different, I don't know. Once you're sure that the bios is actually correctly configured, you can go ahead with installing xp again. But the 300 gig drive may be causing you problems.
However, if you can read and write to it from the other os, that's probably not the problem.

Windows probably only recognizes 130GB or so right? Windows (pre service pack 2) will only see 130GB per partition. I understand your question but you will need to slipstream your installation CD with service pack 2 in order for the windows setup CD to recofnize he entire dirve. Or just install to the 130 GB and then install service pack 2 then in the disk manager you will be able to see the un allocated space on the drive. Then you can use partition magic to partition once windows is installed. Personally i reccomend you to slipstream your xp CD with service pack 2 if you have access to another computer with a CD burner. slipstreaming the xp disc with service pack 2 will intergrate service pack 2 into your into your windows xp installation CD so that you will not have this 130GB barrier when fromtting. Here is a link to a very easy to follow guide: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
You will need the following porgrams installed on the computer you may have access to to do this. Nero the 30 day trial will work just fine. http://www.nero.com/enu/index.html and ISO buster found here: http://www.isobuster.com/isobuster.php
Use free function only for what you need to do
I know you didnt want to hear about sp2 or partition magic but service pack 2 is required to to this. Once you have made a slipstreamed copy of your windows xp cd you will never run into this problem again. Good luck hope this helps
