It would have depended on what country and/or religion the person in question lived in or practiced.

The Jews for a religious example, go by what they believe the number of years since creation, calculated by adding up the ages of people in the Bible back to the time of creation. So this year - 2007 - is 5767 to Hebrews.

The Japanese for a secular (non-religious) example, date their years by who is currently Emperor. So this year - 2007 - is Heisei 19 to Japanese.

Depends on where you were, a lot of times they counted from the beginning of whoever the monarch was. like "year 7 of the reign of Magnanimous the Wonderful, son of King Mediocre the Not so great who ruled for 24 boring years" as oppsed to simply "421BC". Or what have you.

It would depend on the society that you were interested in and whether they had a concept of a calendar. Most would refer to the year of a given ruler.
