Auditioning for Pirates of Penzance and need to do a Gilbert and Sullivan song that is NOT from Pirates. Unfortunately for me, i'm not familiar with their work. Can anyone recommend a piece for a soprano - mezzo sop? Thanks!

I love Gilbert and Sullivan and Pirates of Penzance is definitely one of their best!! For other G&S soprano songs, take a look at these:

The Sun Who Rays are all Ablaze – The Mikado
If Somebody There Chanced to Be – Ruddigore
Sorry Her Lot – H.M.S. Pinafore
Love is a Plaintive Song - Patience

Does it HAVE to be G&S? If not, check out these:

Glitter and be Gay – Candide (if going for Mabel, there are sevel high Eb's both staccato and sustained)
Art is Calling for Me – The Enchantress
Lord and Master – The King and I

Try songs from these shows, all Gilbert & Sullivan:

Gondoliers
H.M.S. Pinafore
Iolanthe
Mikado
Patience
Princess Ida
Ruddigore
The Grand Duke
The Sorcerer
The Yeoman of the Guard
The Zoo
Trial by Jury

Amazon.com has clips of some of them if you look up the individual albums.

Good luck!

I agree with the above poster on The Sun Whose Rays Are All Ablaze from the Mikado. It's very lyrical and lovely.

For a peppier song, if you want to show your ability with the lovely language of G&S, There is Beauty in the Bellow of the Blast.

I'm not very familiar with their other work, either, but I'd look into something from "H.M.S. Pinafore," or "The Mikado."

Good luck--I really enjoyed watching the musical a few years ago.:-)

Try go to him and say to him. Might help.

Break a leg!

P.S. that's probably a tough thing to get into considering you have to sing a song by songwriters not really known.
