Derek is right, all you need is some time and good learning material. No formal schooling is required, but a community is good for dynamic learning and help.
I also have SAMS Teach yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache but for beginners or starting out, I would suggest trying PHP for the World Wide Web by Larry Ullman (from Peachpit Press). It will give you a good foundation to start from and can be used as a reference also. Plus, there is a free forum that you can sign up for and use whether you have the book or not. I frequent it myself and would be happy to help you with any questions that i know the answers to. (here or there)

I have no clue what Steven is talking about. Of course you DON'T need to go to collage and get a degree to learn PHP and MySQL!

I am 15 and I already know HTML and CSS, and a little PHP. I am still learning PHP. I know plenty of 14 and 15 year olds who are skilled in PHP!

If you want to become a webmaster (make a website) you should definatly learn HTML and CSS first. After that, you can start working on PHP.

Well I started with a book called "Teach Yourself PHP/MySql/and Apache in 24Hours" its now from Sams but still written by Meloni. It comes with a CD to help you learn and you can use the code on the CD for many projects latter.

Worth the 20.00 and easy way to start.
It has some great refferences that you can pull up on the web.
So go to your Library and check it out, or order it online, or get it from your local book store and start programming!

I learned and if I can ANYONE can! :) Good Luck and keep reading!

ofcourse you need a degree to but used in the field. hard to end up with a job with a degree. but you don't learn it untill you get that degree and get the job and make a ton of mistake and realize that the degree cost you $100,000 and you dont know anything you need to know.

this is the way our economy works :)

you learn it by working with it everyday. start by taking a class and be patient
