Technically it's not stealing if the person is throwing it out and yes I would take things from the garbage if they were still in good use. America is a throw away society and sometimes we will throw away brand new items for whatever reason. It is true that one mans trash is another mans treasure. If that was true then thrift stores and charity events that sell 'free' items from people that dont want things anymore could be considered theives.
I say take all you want as long as you want...

1. It's not "stealing" to take something that has been discarded as trash.
2. You don't need to be struggling to garbage pick. Hell, I've gotten some nice furniture off tree lawns.
3. Garbage men make good $.

Like what?
No, it's not stealing. Once it's in the garbage can, they have given up responsibilty.
Kudos to you for making less trash.

Once people discard the item, it's for the taking. And yes, if I was struggling to make a living, I'd take anything that is saleable, but not to the extent of stealing from someone.

Sure, but it's not stealing. If it's on the curb for the trash men, then it's fair game. I've gotten some cool stuff that way from rich people who upgraded and their leftovers were still perfectly good.

first of all taking things people put out for the trash is not stealing. second of all there are some people that have money that just throw good stuff to the curb. once mans trash is another man's treasure. you can get some good things that people just put out to the curb. i would not feel bad if i had to do that. i see it all the time when customers are putting good things to the street because they bought something new. you can do what you feel you need to. don't feel bad you should feel bad for those who throw out good stuff.

Once they are thrown away. Would it be stealing? They do
not belong to the garbage company. Its o.k. kid its not like
junk mail. Different value system. Old mail can invade privacy, and be used incorrectly, but an old chair?

I don't have to be a garbage man to take things out the trash. my neighbors have good taste but their very wasteful. I just wish they throw away the loveseat that matches the couch I took.
