This is all anecdotal, but I understand Yao Ming has (or had) an interpreter. Ditto for Daisuke Matsuzaka, the new pitching phenom for the Red Sox.
I understand Jason Varitek, the Boston catcher, had to learn some rudimentary Japanese in order to communicate things to him during mound conferences. Otherwise, like many players, they communicated pitches with signals, and those transcend language.

When Vlade Divac was drafted, Magic Johnson said "As long as he can shoot the ball when I point at the ring, everything is fine," (even if he does not communicate well in English). So I guess as long as they understand each other, all is well.
Yao Ming brought an interpreter with him to the bench.

He would have an interpreter. I believe this was the case with Yao Ming the first few years he played in the NBA.

You have to be kidding. Half the NBA can't speak English, and English is their native language!
