I Am lookign to buy a laptop soon and was wondering if the 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS, is superior to the 7800GTX. I got the 7800GTX in my desktop, and although its an old guy now, it runs really well. The 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS is DirectX 10 card, and its 383MB instead of the 7800GTX's 256MB.

But does that nessecarily mean the 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS is superior to the 7800GTX. I just wanna know for refrence so I can get a clue of what I am getting in a notebook before I order it.

Benchmarks on the mobile processors are tougher to find.

I'd expect the 7800GTX to have better performance in existing DX9 games. While the 8800 series is great, the 8600 and 8500 cards have gotten mediocre marks from all the hardware review sites. They are nothing special performance-wise- so I wouldn't expect that to change dropping down to the 8400.

The only downside to the 7800GTX is the lack of DX10 support, but that isn't really a big deal since no games use it yet, and it's only supported in Vista, which many people won't touch until the first service pack (at least). Honestly- by the time DX10 becomes widely adopted there will be a new generation of cards, and we don't even know how much better things will actually look.

GPU Review didn't have reference numbers for the mobile 8400M, but here's the comparison of the PCI-E 8400 GS vs the 7800GTX- as expected, the midrange older card is faster than the low-end newer card.

The 7800GTX would be about three times faster, and that is a conservative estimate. First off, dekstop cards are always faster than laptop cards, because laptop cards have to be designed to run on a smaller amount of power, and to produce a smaller amount of heat. Add onto that the fact that you are comparing a fairly high end (at least when it was released) desktop card to a low end laptop card, and the gap gets even bigger. Now yes the 8400 is a generation newer and has DirectX 10, but that is not nearly enough to overcome the gap. If you want actual numbers, the 7800GTX has about a 3.5 times faster fillrate, and about a 4 times faster memory bandwidth. Hopefully that gives you a good idea of what to expect.
