Where I'm from, a yellow ribbon on the door or on a tree near the house means that you have a family member in a dangerous situation- sickness, war, pretty much if their fate was uncertain. It was a way of alerting the community that there was a member( or members) who needed to be watched over.

no it comes from the song tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree. it is the sentiment that loved ones are telling their soldiers that they still and always will love them while thet wait for them to come home.

Yellow ribbons have become almost as meaningless - due to overuse - as Jesse Jackson appearing at a rally for almost anything.
The original intent and meaning has been lost through overuse.
