I have just been to see a gynocologist, first he did an internal examination, then he did a C.T scan, then he inserted a strange long looking camera, so that he could get a good look at my uterus, ovaries etc etc. Anyway, this is when he discovered this very small polyp, either on my ovary or my uterus, cant remember where he said now!
I have got to go and have a general anaesetic next week to have it removed, it is then sent for a biopsy, which apparently is standard proceedure.
I am now worried sick, can these polyps be cancerous?
Thanks for any advice

A polyp is an abnormally projecting growth of mucous membrane, somewhat similar to a wart or skin tag.

A uterine polyp is a rather common growth within the uterine cavity. It is usually not cancer, but may lead to abnormal bleeding. Typically it is detected by gynecologic ultrasonography or sonohysterography. It can be removed through surgery (hysterectomy). On a rare occasion, and more so in patients after the menopause a lesion may develop into a cancer.

Although they can happen at any time, uterine polyps most commonly occur in women in their 40s and 50s.

Cysts are more commonly found on the ovary.

While it is natural to be concerned about your health, you can take positive steps to rest and eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables. You are being responsible by getting medical attention. Wishing you all the best.

I hope this helps.

The existence of polyps is normal, however should be addressed by a doctor asap. A polyp may or may not be cancerous. You have been scheduled for a biopsy, whereas they will remove the polyp(s) and send it in to the lab to be further examined. Weather or not it is cancerous is the purpose of the biopsy you will have done. The lab will test it for cancer or not.
