the president was worried about what a former loyalist might say when actually staring into a jail cell?

His sentence was commuted, which means (as I understand it) the case can technically be considered still under appeal, so he cannot be forced to testify under oath, thus keeping his little secrets secret.

If he received a full pardon, he could be made to testify under oath.

Absolutely. Why would Bush do such a politically unpopular thing, after ranting on for years about the rule of law? It was because Scooter would write a tell all book and make zillions spilling his guts about this inept administration. He bought his silence, at least till the end of the president's term.

nope, because the whole thing was a witchhunt. libby was not guilty of anything other than being a way to get to cheney.i am no fan of the rep's but plame was not a covert agent, it was widely known in washington and other nations she was an agent and it wasn't libby who outed her it was the reporter who interviewed her. the thing is she and her hubby were involved in some let's say 'less than honest' dealings and when they were confronted they got upset, called the dem wolfs and started pointing fingers, it works every time...deflect and distract. btw conviceted felon former prez clinton didn't serve any jail time, neither did sandy ' stuff the classified files' down your pants burger. also clinton actually pardoned several ppl when he got into office but he did it for money. if you want to berate someone for an offense then at least be fair and berate all.

Mrs Libby did say that if Scooter went to jail he wasn't going alone.

I think you nailed it!

I was just going to post the same #@!*& question, but you seem to have beat me to it!

Today Bush even left the door open to an eventual full pardon. He just wants to save that move 'til the last day of his term, like Clinton did.

Donors have got all of his bills and fines covered, and probation for a weenie like that will be nothing at all. What, "don't lie to any more Grand Juries for the next two years or you'll be in REAL trouble...."?

Makes a patriot want to puke.

These Republicans have their own Good ol' boy network. Just like in Iran-Contra when Bush pardoned all those convicts aiding the illegal network, when one of them is in trouble, they will always bail him out and help him back up the ladder to ruining our nation.
