Emma Mærsk is a container ship owned by the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. When she was launched, Emma Mærsk became the largest container ship ever built, and as of 2007 the longest ship in use. The largest ship ever built was the supertanker Knock Nevis, formerly the Jahre Viking, but now it serves as a floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) See http://www.dxman.com/undir/big-ship/jahre%20viking.htm

Officially, Emma Mærsk is able to carry around 11,000 TEU in the calculation of the Mærsk company¹ which is about 1,400 more containers than any other ship is capable of carrying.

¹See: Emma Mærsk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - And I know this is true because I have seen her on quite a few occasions approaching the terminals at Felixtowe. And when she does, the local press as you would expect, are always happy to boast about it!

Put: Maersk Emma (shipping) into Google. It will be your top hit - with a picture: possibly entering Felixtowe.

It’s longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall , wider than the width of a football field and it can officially hold 11,000 20-foot-long shipping containers, though some suggest it can pack in even more.

And it floats.

These days, cargo vessels are the largest ships around, and the king of these crafts is the oil tanker Jahre Viking, which logs in at 1,503 feet long and 226 feet wide. It boasts a gross tonnage of 565,000 tons!

Probably not the biggest "ship", but possibly the biggest "yacht": See: http://www.wired.com/culture/design/magazine/15-07/ff_boat
