What should I do? Adjust my 19-inch monitor or change to a 17-inch? Are there any theories about the optimal size monitor for human eyes?

Perhaps because your eyes have to cover more space in the 19" screen, therefore working your eyes more. However, I believe that you will get used to the screen size after using it for some time. Just imagine that you are exercising your eyes (which you are) and then soon you will be used to it.

Turn the brightness down to a comfortable level.

Sit back a bit further. Everything is bigger, you do not need to sit as close as with the 17"

As for all computer users:

Do not stare at the screen continuously. Look away every few minutes, close your eyes for a second.

Sit back and stretch regularly. Again close your eyes for a second or two.

Every hour or so get up an move around. Get a drink, go to the bathroom, go say Hi to a friend, whatever. Just get up and move your body.

Make sure you drink enough.
