Independence Day -- commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 -- is an official holiday. Non-essential government operations are shut down, and most private employers close as well.
As always, there will be some people who have to work -- both essential government employees (law enforcement, fire and such) and some private employees.
Most of us, though, will be drinking beer, cooking outdoors, watching parades in the morning and fireworks in the evening.

It is a National Holiday in America, but most stores are open, so no, not everyone gets the day off.

It is a national holiday, but that doesn't mean everyone gets the day off. Especially not people in retail, since stores are open at least short hours that day.

It's a national holiday, but a few have to work. A lot of jobs are 24/7/365.

It's a national holiday and it used to be that everything shut down except emergency services. Nowdays stores see a day off as more people shopping. After 231 years I guess all it means to Americans is shopping and fireworks. Sad.

Yes, it is. We celebrate our independence from British rule that day because it was on July 4th, 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Not *everyone* gets the day off, but a very significant number of people do.

It's a national holiday but restaurants are still open and my husband is working. I, on the otherhand, have the day off.
