Working smart is working with a goal in mind, a goal that is meaningful to you. Working smart also means knowing what points are high priority and what you can be flexible on, so you can focus on what's important. Working smart also means...being creative and looking for other ways to get work done faster. For eg, consulting with an expert on something, or delegating a task to someone, instead of trying to do it all on your own.

A domesticated donkey does hard work.
Human beings are capable of smart work, though they can end up doing just hard work due to lack of awareness, stuck in the comfort of getting into the groove of a lesser burdensome 'routine' !

Hard work is using brute force to get the job done. It takes a lot more energy to achieve your tasks. Smart work is finding a way to get the job done easier.

An example would be lifting a big rock. You can just use brute force to get a hold of it, and lift it, or your can get a board and another rock to make a lever to lift it. It takes a fraction of the energy and gets the same job done. That's working smarter.

The adage: work smarter not harder.
Smart work - approaching your task with planning. Break it down into steps and look for the most efficent way to do it. Share out the work load. Apply efficent logistics.

Hard work - jump into it. See nothing but a-holes and elbows.
Do whatever presents itself. Stay busy, busy. Only have on hand what you need at the moment. Go get whatever you need as you come to it.

Smart work is organized work; making your physical energy and movements count. Basically, getting the biggest "bang" for your efforts.

Hard work is just sweat and toil. People who don't work "smart" are guaranteed to work harder.
