Puerto Vallarta is great place to go on a romantic vacation. There are some beautiful sites in town to walk around; good restaurants to have a nice dinner.
If you feel adventurous you can go other beaches around, like to "Mismaloya", a beautiful beach; "Punta Mita", Manzanilla, Quimixto, Yelapa and "Las Animas"; those are great beaches. There are small criuises that can get you to those beaches (accesible only by boat) for about 40 usd. the "Princesa Yelapa" cruise is one of the most comercial. Another beautiful beach is "bucerias". All of these places are great to have the kids doing some beach activities.
Some of these beaches are actually in Nayarit but they're pretty close to PV.
In Mismaloya and Punta Mita you can get into one of the many little restaurants they have by the beach order a drink and stay there the whole day; obviously the sea food there is delicious.

Puerto Vallarta is nice! The beach is not the prettiest in Mex,
but I love the old part of town. It's got a fun market, a promenade along the sea (malecon), and boat trips to some nearby island would be great.
If you stay in the beach area north of the old town, where all the large resort hotels are, you can have fun at the pool or other hotel facilites, but you'll be a bit sheltered from the authentic feel of old town. My choice is old town! If you can handle a little more dirt, it's REAL, unlike Cancun.

I live about 20min north of the border. If i go south that is where they do all the beheading and chainsaw mutilations u hear about. I wont even go to the cities that are near the border and still on the U.S. side. If i want to get down there to the beautiful cities i have to go thru dangerous road and that is not worth it. I wont fly. Just a month ago cartel came to this side of the border and took a guy while he was eatin with his family at a resturant and an hr later he was found dead execution style. They come and find their targets tryin to hide and get the job done then leave. usually if u got no beef with them u wont even run into them so if anything hopefully it stays that way at the very least. I used to go as a child. it is ashame nothin like true mexican food from mexico itself. dam taquitos :)~
