I was born in Guyana (that's in South America). Does that mean I am an American or does it mean that I am not an American?(I live in Canada now)
Thank You?

In a few years this question will be a mute point. With NAFTA, the USA, Canada and Mexico are already united economically. This trade agreement will soon be legal in all of North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. Everyone one in the Western Hemisphere will become 'AMERICANS' legally and will be able to live anywhere in the Western Hemisphere they want. It will be one economic, social and political zone.

The passport you have will tell you which country you are now a citizen of. I would think you are Guyanian, unless one of your parents has a passport from another country. You may then be a dual citizen with one of your parent's home countries. It can be confusing. Look at your passport. If you don't have a passport, then you may also be illegal, then I would suggest you get a lawyer and straighten that situation out. Sometimes, especially children, don't know they are illegally in a country and find out many years later. You really need to know your legal status. Good luck.

You were born on the continent of South America but your country is Guyana, therefore you are Guyanese. Canada is in North America and if you were born there you would be called a Canadian.

If you are born in the USA, then you are an American but this refers to the country (United States of America) and not the continent.

We (Americans) are always getting attacked for calling ourselves Americans, as if we are claiming that we are the only ones entitled to be called that. And we are, but that's only because the title is based on our country name, not the continent the country is in.

There are many countries in The Americas, but only one country with the word America in its title.

Yes, you areSouth American. And to Alea S, a person from Guyana is called a Guyanese. Everything does end with "ian" . Get real and read, before writing.

You're a continental American, as are Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, etc. (like Chinese, Indians, and Arabians are all Asians, and New Zealanders are Australians.) But obviously you're not an 'American citizen' as in the United States.

Not in the legal sense in America - when we say American in the US, it means born in the US or nationalized. So no. But in the general sense, sure.
