Try going to start/programs/accessories/system tools and run an application called disk cleanup.

Backup the system as they said, use disk clean up program, remove any unused programs using the windows explorer program or the auto uninstall for that program - then use the defragment program to finish clean up. Make sure your trash box is empty before you defrag or it will try to work these items into the system and slow it down again.

my CS degree is speaking to me here its saying, 'don't earse memory erase files!' well just back all the files you want up onto a couple of DVDs or what ever and reformat the computer works for me

if your computer is running slow, you definitely Don't want to "erase memory".

you can remove memory but that will make it even slower if you mean free up some space, backup the files you want to keep to cd/dvd and delete them off your computer. remove any programs/games you dont use any more
