I've read The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. It's a great adventure book and doesn't have the darkness of the other Lord of The Rings books.

I completely enjoyed it, and since it is not too long, I read it in about 5 hours (over the course of a week). If you like The Hobbit, then go ahead and read the rest of the LOTR series, but while they are still full of adventure and are hard to put down, they are much darker, as the Fellowship members are fighting to stop the spread of evil in their world.

I read both of them. While they are very different types of texts, I liked both of them and recommend them to others. If you prefer fantasy/adventure, you would choose The Hobbit. If you prefer your fiction to seem more like real life, you'd select Asher Lev, which is about the insights and challenges of a young Jew's rites of passage. Both are well written, both have surface level stories and deeper, underlying meanings for the reader to infer and interpret. Neither reads overly fast. However, my students loved reading The Hobbit. They liked the unique characters, the wild adventures, and the interesting journey of Bilbo Baggins. I think I read the Hobbit in 6 or 7 hours and the same for Asher Lev. Why don't you look up a summary on the Internet to see which one you would prefer. If this is for a class, you might want to think about your final assignment to see which book best lends itself to completing that assignment.
Enjoy!

I only have an experience with the Hobbitt. I've read it several times. It's the prelude to The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Its an esay enjoyable read that you will remember for the rest of your life. Tolkiens characters impress everyone who reads about them....

I read The Hobbit when I was 10 and enjoyed it. It was over summer vacation, so it probably took me a week or two, when I wasn't riding my bike or swimming :)

Don't know the other book you mentioned.
