Most people will respond with "that's personal". Even if they do tell you it doesn't mean you are going to get some of their wages. What difference does it make if someone knows? I have had well paid jobs and badly paid jobs and I have never cared who knows how much I get paid. I sometimes ask this question out of sheer curiosity, but most people are reluctant to tell. What's the big deal. It's hardly like asking if you have any kind of genital deformity. As the majority of people refuse to say, I am expecting a barrage of stern responses. Please be polite. I'm only asking you why you won't tell - not how much you earn!

#1 it is professional to keep your compensation to yourself. if your boss gives you are raise and you tell your co-workers about it, what do you think they are going to do? exactly, run right to the boss and ask for similar compensation.

#2 it's personal. no body needs to know how much you make (or lack there of).

above everything it is a sense of profesionalism.

Either modesty or embarrassment. Some people make a fair amount of money and don't want to spread the word. If you hear someone has a lot of money, your "greed instinct" tells you to be friends with them and in a way, use them for what they're worth. Others make minimal amounts of money and are embarrassed to admit that they're poor and don't make enough to support either themselves, their kids, or both.

Often times, it's modesty. The amount one works hard to make is personal. You might not care that people know how much you make, to others, it's a personal matter, something they're modest about.

Heres a story for you.

I ve been with my man for years and he makes very good money now in the six figure range. But right out of college when he graduated he started off at 40 or 50k. Ill never forget a few years ago when I told an old gf about how much he made during general discussion. Eventually a long time later, I was telling her that my man was going to take me on a cruise for my bday, unbeknownst to her he had just got a huge a ss raise, but I never told her this. She hits me with "Why is he taking you on a cruise, he has no money for those kind of things." "Shouldnt he be saving his money." Just general blah blah b lah b lah. I was at a lost for words for this girl, because I never mentioned the fact that her parents were still carrying her lil *** along and her man was doing NOTHING for her, even on special occasions (because she told me this herself). So I just ended our relationship without one drop of regret. I realized I messed up from the beginning by telling her about any financial information about my man at the time. But I learned a very valuable l esson in not running my mouth to people who are only going to hate on you because of jealousy. This is why I have very limited female friends and I keep my mouth shut about financial issues. This is also why I dont have to work. Quite frankly, it just keeps everything at peace. If you spread your financial status all over and tell the WRONG person you do put yourself at risk in some fashion. Just FYI....

Do you understand now?????

I don't tell anyone what my salary is simply because it is my personal business. Well my husband and parents know.

Just from experience, when I did tell one person what I made when she asked I got a negative response from her like I was showing off or bragging and she has treated me different ever since. So I just chose to keep it to myself.

Because it is personal. Why would you want to know or even care what anybody else makes. Why would you want to tell anybody what you make. Maybe you are embarrassed or even don't want to brag about it. I think the real question here is, why do you want to know?

I personally don't feel comfortable in telling anyone but close friends what I make. It's nothing that they need to know and it will not help them in any way.

It is deemed not to be polite to ask people "personal" questions, it is a American custom, that I believe is correct.
