2 x 3 means 2 taken 3 times. If you put two pennies into a box three times and count them you will have six pennies. We sometimes take the simple logic of a mathematical statement for granted without connecting it to the physical world. Much of math was 'invented' by people with practical problems to solve. Even 'zero' was a great invention.
