I feel that it's offending that people call Amanda Beard a Playboy model first, and THEN they call her a swimmer. She's a swimmer first. What do you all think about it?

Sex sells even more than sports. It's a matter of media in society. Look at Anna Kournikova, no one knew really who she was until she got naked. Swimming isn't really a hugely popular sport like the NFL or NHL or NBA. More people read Playboy than watch swimming. Human nature dictates that people will be known for their most socially risky endeavour. Other examples of this fame by shock value include Vlad the Impaler from as long ago as the 1400s, Michael Jackson, OJ Simpson, Paris Hilton, Ronald Regan, Bill Clinton and numerous other people who have been made celebrities based on the most shocking aspect of their lives, not necessarily the most respectful or positive.

I don't find it offensive simply because she chose to put herself in the spotlight this way. She's an amazing swimmer and also a very beautiful young lady. Those who follow the sport will know more about her career and those who don't will probably know her best for her most socially shocking endeavour, just like most other well-known people.

Indeed, she was a swimmer first and will always be a swimmer to me. But to some, they neever even knew who she was until they opened her Playboy issue.

oh, how i wished that Summer Sanders had posed for playboy.

I'll always remember Amanda carrying that teddy bear around with her... "my blood runs cold, my memory has just been sold, my angel is the centerfold, angel is the centerfold..."
