The target goal within the first capability to efficiently ship cargo / personnel to our moon would be to set up a moon base. Its a hope that an under-crust base will be set up that can be self-sustaining. Hydroponics would be set up, and hopefully structures will be built large enough to house trees and help to provide a small but stable ecosystem to allow for C02 scrubbing and oxygen generation.
Following that wonderful base... would be industry. And thats where alot of private funders minds are going, to the asteriod belts, and to major abundant resources. Pulling in those resources, to earth? not a good idea. To a base in orbit? better. But a base with very little gravity? In this case the moon would be ideal.
Zero-gravity manufacturing and heavy industry are benefits.
1) Keeps dirty and harmful industry off-earth.
2) Provides a new working environment where exotic metals and other materials can be processed better or faster. Also there is the potential to discover new materials.
3) Provides a type of quarantine for materials, oxygen and water resources before they are brought into Earths atmosphere.
and on and on...
Not because the sun is expanding, or because our orbit is slowly corkscrewing closer to the sun. If that even happens the human race will probably be extinct before then.

The space program is a drop in the bucket withing the federal budget. People have been saying for decades that the money could be spent better on this and that. The fact is even if they decided to end the space program tomorrow there would be no expectation that that money would be spent on social programs.
The idea of a Moon base can be compared to the bases that many countries have established in Antarctica. It will be for scientific experiments and to develop the means for further human exploration like Mars.

As was said, we need to start know to get out and about. The Moon and later Mars will help us to understand all science branches much better. Knowledge is the key to survival, both here and now in this world, and later in others. Though Earth will last a long time, it is hardly forever, and our species is not also. For that eternal longevity, we need to start now, as tomorrow is too late.

Well there are 6 billion people on Earth. That number keeps expanding exponentialy. We have to learn to
A. limit number of births.
or
B. Expand to other Planets. Although this is not possible now
we must learn some way. Travel to the moon and other planets is necessary.

Sooner or later, life on Earth will need to move to Mars, because the Sun will slowly become hotter over the next few billion years, as it moves off the main sequence. There's no reason, however, why this move can't be delayed a million years or so, until we get our act together on Earth.

We don't HAVE to. But if we want to learn how to colonize other planets in other solar systems in the very distant future after our sun burns out, we will need to practice somewhere. Learning to do it on a place so close to home will be a great advantage for us.

You need to learn to walk before running. The moon is the first step. We need to be able to do it there first before even thinking about Mars.
