"Van" means "of", while "Van der" means "of the."

here are some examples:

Edwin van der Sar = "of the bait", probably referring to a fisherman...

Rafael van der Vaart = "of the speed"

strangely enough, I wasn't able to find translations for the regular "van" names without the "der." The two I looked up were van Nistelrooy and van Persie

van means of just like do or da or de... and van der is like of the... just like dos or das. my full name has the portuguese equivalent of van der in it.
