i'm in England and sometimes refer to my trousers as pants
Most people tell me that 'pants' means 'underpants' and that i'm using an Americanisation
But what are underpants? surely they are something to wear 'under-pants'. So underpants go under your PANTS.

I think they call them pants. I used to wonder what they called their actual pants (underwear).
