No Florida city is safe from hurricanes. Even in the middle of the state, when a hurr. blows across, it sets off tornadoes and heavy rains and does just as much damage.
The thing to do is just prepare with food, water, batteries, gas, etc. and not worry about it, but don't live in a trailer, don't live in a flood zone, and cover your windows, etc. They say that right near the beach is not a good place to be. You're supposed to evacuate, but lots of people just stay and light candles and have a hurricane party.
It's usually just a long, hard rainstorm with noisy wind and eveything closed if the power is off.
Your odds of getting hit by the big one are pretty low.
In other places, there are earthquakes, droughts, crime, tornadoes, floods, fires, and other threats, so just pick where you want to live (except trailer parks or flood zones) and it's all equal, in Florida I mean.

I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, and needless to say, the South Florida area gets hit pretty regularly. I went to school in DeLand, about 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and rarely had any real problems.
If you look at the state map, and tracked hurricanes over the past 20 years or so, you'd see that there is not a lot of direct hits from the Daytona Beach area, up to Jacksonville. The worst was the year before Katrina when 4 storms criss-crossed the middle of the state, the same year...something that's never happened before. Take out that one year, and you'd see hardly any major hurricane effects.
But, remember, if you're looking for a guaranteed area that you won't be affected by hurricanes, then you need to start looking at Kansas. But, then you'd better start learning about tornadoes...

I would not choose Venice (it may not have gotten hit as hard but it's southern neighbors Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda did about 4 years ago), It's right on the gulf which gets hit hard due to the warm waters, there have been a lot of hurricanes in this area(from Naples to Pensacola) in the past decade.....if you want to live in Florida but want to stay the furthest away from hurricanes I would live in Cental Florida.

Don't know for sure, but try Venice and areas close by that dodge hurricanes regularly.

I would say Orlando but they have been hit pretty hard the last couple of years. No where really, but the more inland you are the better. Maybe Sebring
