In general, moon is a natural satellite which came from earth itself (theory). A large impact flung chunks of earth into space and attracted into one place creating moon. It has same composition as earth which supports the theory.

The moon is the second brightest object in the sky and it attracts amateur astronomers like me.

Moons in general are spherical bodies which orbit larger spherical bodies which in turn orbit the sun. This is why Pluto, which is nearly the same size as earth's moon, is a "dwarf planet" and not a "dwarf moon". Pluto orbits the sun and not one of the planets.

The origin of earth's moon was a mystery until humans collected rocks from the moon. The rocks were nearly identical to the rocks froun on the surface of the earth. This led to a theory which stated another planet the size of mars collided with the earth shortly after it had formed. This melted the surface of the earth and threw enormous amounts of molten rock into space. It formed a ring of material around the earth. Gravity then condenced this material into a sphere oribiting the earth. This was the moon. It was thousands of miles closer to earth and has been slowly drifting farther away for billions of years.

The moon may have also played a role in the evolution of the first tetrapods. No amphibian can tolerate salt water. This indicates their ancestors were freshwater fish. Freshwater fish lived away from the ocean cost. Some 300 million years ago, the moon was much closer to earth and generated tides which were probably equivalent to the tsunami which destroyed Indonesia. This happened twice a day. There was probably very little life on the ocean shore. This was why life on land had to evolve far inland in a fresh water environment.

a bit of rock (it has mostly the same composition as rock from earth, so some scientists think it is a piece of earth that went into space when a mars sized object collided with the earth), that is in the orbit of the Earth.
