Internet advice links say to poor hot water, bleach or a cleaner into overflow. However, this is easier said than done since the overflow hole is small and almost vertical. I've tried a small funnel, but can't position it at an angle that it works. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Plug the drain and fill the sink with hot water until it spills into the overflow opening.

Brian D is correct. Set the plug, pour in about one cup of bleach. Slowly, to avoid splashing, run water into the sink and let it fill and overflow into the hole. Let it run until the bleach smell is gone.
