Yes they log it. The workplace I left in December recently dismissed someone for spending too long on the Internet. He was not the worse culprit - some were logged on from arriving until leaving - but they wanted an excuse to get rid of him. Best thing is to use messenger and keep it polite and no swearing. Keep your personal use of the Internet at work down to a minimum and as a rule of thumb don't write anything at work or visit any sites that you would not be happy for your mum to read or see. HR on a mission can be unpleasant.

Your employer certainly can determine your internet use and many do.
One of the common ways that people try to hide is by the use of proxy sites which claim to be able to mask or hide your activity. Any half way intelligent system administrator will also be looking for proxy site access and even accessing a proxy is considered for what it is - an attempt to mask improper internet use.
Frankly, I fail to understand how any employee can consider use of the employer's resources for personal matters appropriate. The Internet access and related IT equipment are the employer's resources that have been set up to enable the empoyer and employees conduct business. Use of the resources for personal use is totally improper. What is even more upsetting is that the employee is probably on the payroll while he is conducting personal business.
Numerous companies have discharged employees for abuse of company resource way before Internet acces was made available. These discharges are upheld by any reviewers of the discharge. Internet use violation is also a sound reason for discharge - and is also upheld.
My recommendation - conduct personal Internet business from your personal Internet Service Provider at your residence. Your job is at stake and it should be.

In situations like these it would be best to not use your employer's internet at all. The only reason you should do this is if your employer knows you are looking for a job and is fine with it. Otherwise you are risking getting fired. I don't think the resume can be detected but if someone happens to be near you while you're sending it then you might get caught. Tread carefully.

Yes - not only can they see all of that but they can see any emails you send out. Yahoo, gmail, hotmail are all web-based email programs and there is always a record of it. If you do not want them to see what you are doing, I would suggest not doing it. They can scan your computer at anytime (and probably already do) to see what programs you are running, sites you are visiting, etc.
Deleting cookies doesn't work. And deleting your history doesn't work.
All companies have networks and your usage goes through their network and they are keeping track of it all as they need to monitor for hackers, viruses, etc. Just deleting those temp files won't cover your tracks.

if the administrator looks at the usage,he'll surely be able to realise that u r using yahoo mail & messenger(mail.yahoo.com is a separate domain which can easily be traced).if u want to use messenger, try using some web messengers(www.meebo.com , www.ebuddy.com etc are few to be mentioned).

Check your contract of employment, it will normally say what you can do or not do as the case may be, follow the comments on here, use the internet at home, not at work!

ANY net traffic goes thru a gateway server.. so even if you go via proxy's that is short lived. they just add that to the blocked list..
best way is to keep none work related surfing to home..
don't use your work email address to send emails either, even for jokes etc.
as some people have got the sack.

If they monitor internet traffic as it leaves the company network on the company firewall, then it wont matter if you delete your cookies or not it will still show up, but it depends on the size of the company and their IT security policy

Yes, be careful. Your employer can do a track and trace on every single thing you do on your computer. If you get caught, it is classed as gross misconduct and they can sack you on the spot.
If you ask their permission, I am sure they would let you in your time and not in theirs. They will probably respect you for asking too.
