Perhaps ask her in a way that won't put her on the defensive as to why she won't let her daughter wear tampons. Let her know that you've worn tampons since you were 11 and have had no health issues with them.
Does your friend wear tampons?
I too started wearing them around age 11.
Her period will not stop in water. Its just that the water disperses the blood quickly so it looks like it stopped.

I got my period when I was 11. I was too embarrassed to ask if I could wear tampons for a year or two. I thought my mom would say "no". I spent my summer at my grandparent's lake house every summer and instead of not swimming, I wore a bathing suit as usual but kept my underwear on underneath it and wore shorts over my bathing suit...with a maxi pad on. I know it sounds gross but I was able to swim as usual and not worry at all.
I later asked my mom for tampons (embarrassing!) and she gladly agreed. She laughed that I would make such a big deal of it. I would talk to you friend and see why she won't let her wear tampons, explain your feelings, you might be helping the young girl by doing so!

I think its a matter of how comfortable you are. It's all about the girl. If she feels ok with it, then there's really no reason she shouldn't.
Have you talked to the mother herself? Because I wouldn't be suprised if maybe she doesn't have much experience with them herself. They're a bit daunting at first after all. Talk to her and let her in on the benefits. Why should woman have a lesser life for a week a month when lets face it...it's just not necessary.

I think once a girl has her period, that pretty much makes her old enough...
Unfortunately your friend sounds like a mom who is afraid that her daughter is growing up too fast and wants to slow it down...
Mentally, it could be scarring to this girl. There are factors that her mom has to take into consideration here, like, odour, for one. With a pad, this girl will constantly be feeling like she can smell herself, therefore in her mind so can everyone else. And that could turn her into introverted. Secondly, in school, in gym class to be specific, this girl will feel too embarrassed to GO to gym class if she feels that her pad will be seen or whatnot...
As her friend, you really should sit down with her, make a list of points why tampons are better than pads in this situation, and hopefully she'll see she needs to loosen up a bit and do whats right for her daughter's mental state.
I went to school with a girl who's mom was the same way. This girl would buy tampons herself and not tell her mom...
Good luck...

Yeah when a child gets her period I believe they are ready for a tampon. You feel aslo cleaner and better about yourself and also so you can go swimming! I started my period when I was 12 and I used tampons right away.

well, personally i dont think there is a certain age that grants you a privelege of wearing tampons. sounds like the mother is scared of what it might lead to..tho it might be nothing. if the Dr. said its ok, i dont see any problem..maybe a certain person could help the girl out. i know at 11 i would love tampons 110% more than pads.

I think any age that the daughter herself feels responsible enough and is comfortable enough to try them. I think that the mother should just let her daughter give them a try!

Any age is fine, as you suspect. If the dr has okayed it and she still isn't going for it then I think she's probably screwed for now. Unless a certain someone decides to purchase them for her in secret.

I agree the age is fine as long as she can comfortably insert them. But other than delicately bringing it up with your friend, there's not much you can do as it's not your kid.

I started wearing them when I was about 12 -- probably about 6 to 8 months after my first period and I never had any problems with them.
Honestly though it's not really your place to interject with your friend. Your menstrual flow will stop while you're in the water -- so she can still swim -- just as soon as she gets out of the pool she needs to make a bee-line for the bathroom to put in a pad.
