Use a new-car research site to find all the vehicles in your price range. Make a list of the ones that you find appealing, based on looks, options available, features, etc.
Then take the list and start going to dealerships... If you tell the salesperson that you just want to look and test drive, they usually won't try to pressure you into buying the vehicle right away. If they try to get you inside to "talk numbers", tell them flat out that you have other cars to look at, and are not ready to buy yet. If they are still pushy, go to another dealership.
This could take a while, but it is the only way to know you got the best car. Following somebody else's advice on "best car" is pointless, different people look for different things in a car. Just remember to take your time. You decide when you buy, not some pushy salesman.

Hi - first car? This am on CNN they rated the best cars - (july 3/07) go check it out, but the best, safest, etc was the Hyundai, the SUV - go take it for a test drive - good luck in your choice. A car is a good 10year investment, take good care of it and never lend your car to 'ANYONE! My father taught me something that I believe has saved my life more then once - "always keep your eye on the guy behind the guy in front of you" - get it? that's YOU!!! Drive as though your LIFE depended on it.

You cannot go wrong buying a New Honda Civic or buy a used Honda with low mileage. Nothing can touch Hondas for both reliability and resale value
