For the past 30 or so years we have lived in an age where Americans look to deflect the blame for everything and stand up for nothing. Children participate in sports leagues where they don't keep score, schools don't give letter grades until 3rd grade, phsychologists and school administrators tell kids when they screw up that "it's not YOU it's the BEHAVIOR".
So when we grow into adulthood and things go wrong, we have been conditioned to look for reasoning other than our own accountability or moral fiber- therefore it can't be ME who screwed up, it must be something beyond my control like- DEPRESSION! Yeah, that's it- I killed my whole family because I was depressed, I robbed that bank because I was depressed, I embezzled from my employer because I was depressed, ect.
Clinical depression is a real disease that can be caused by several factors, and those who struggle with it know it's challenges are real. But many in todays society are using it as a scapegoat to explain improper or substandard behavior that they choose not to control.

Honey, I wish I knew. I have had Doctors prescribe me "anti-depression" drugs for YEARS. I have told the Doctors repeatedly that I'm NOT depressed. I occasionally have panic attacks, or get nervous in certain situations. HOWEVER that is NOT the same as depression. The Doctors have tried Paxil,Prozac,Zoloft,Lexapro,Remeron, etc. ALL those meds made me suicidal. Plus, I was almost zombie-like. Why do they not listen ? Why so quick to chalk everything upsetting in life to depression & every ache & pain you have to depression ? Makes no sense.

Because rather then getting up and actually doing something about it they can sit around and complain they are depressed and want everyone else to pity them?
