I thought it was a brilliant piece that showed the male thinking of that period of time in a outstanding way. It also shows how different our society is now when compared to the society then.

not a male but wanted to correct something:
handmaid's tale is not a historical fiction. it is a futuristic fiction about how literalist relgious following can destroy society.
reminded me of the taliban in afganistan in the 1990s when i first read it. beginning to remind me of the desires of the relgious right in this country and others....

Like most dystopian visions, it is more than just a little bit hysterical. It represents modernity's fear of pre-modern social relationships and expresses the fragile nature of modern social constructs.
